Create your own magic, moving pictures at Kensington Palace, take part in Isaac Newton’s light demonstration to the queen and discover the science of animation. Join in the action and explore the history of Kensington Palace as a showcase of scientific discovery:
  • Take part in Isaac Newton's light demonstration to Queen Caroline and create your own light patterns in the palace.
  • Create your own moving picture and discover how a Magic Lantern works.
  • Play with Victorian toys and find out how we see moving pictures in these early examples of animation. Then have a go at making your own thaumatrope toy inspired by the palace.

Create your own Victorian animation toy to take home. Please book tickets on the day at our Time Explorers Station.

Family Friendly Facilities: We have regular workshops the last Saturday of every month and lots of activities during the school holidays. Find out what's on by visiting the family activities pagePick up a family trail and explore elegant Kensington Palace, childhood home of the future Queen Victoria and much later Diana, Princess of Wales. During the school holidays special family activities are planned and please remember that children under sixteen need to be accompanied by an adult at all times. Baby-changing facilities are available and pushchairs can be easily taken around the palace as there is a lift to all floors.
Accessibility:
There is level access from Kensington Gardens to the palace, a lift to all floors and wheelchairs and portable seating to borrow during your visit. We also offer Describer Tours for blind and partially sighted visitors as well as facilitating British Sign Language tours.
