Workshop: Friday Oct 15, 4.30 - 6 pm, Charlotte Weiss & Julia Dorninger: Atemlinien
What does our breath have to do with drawing? Unconscious or conscious thinking, acting, our feelings and our sensations are reflected in our stroke and not least in our breath. Singer and breathing pedagogue Charlotte Weiss and architect and artist Julia Dorninger will enter into a drawing-breathing dialogue on 15 October as part of a workshop and will open up the world of living breathing drawing to you, dear visitors. Join us on a fictitious journey into our interior and the space around us, possibly you will discover a lot and maybe get a little closer to yourself!

Artist statement
The occupation with spatial perception and spatial appropriation is an essential basic theme of my work. The focus of my artistic research is the lived interdependence between human beings and spatial structure. In the course of my artistic processes I do not consider space as something fixed, as a closed entity, but as an ephemeral structure that is continuously produced through processes of perception, memory and imagination. Moreover, I consider space as a social construct, as a result of actions and the economic, legal, social and cultural structures that are connected to or dependent on them. The function and use of spatial structures are closely tied to processes of social transformation, which in turn influence the perception and use of space. The title of the exhibition 'Understanding Places' references Marc Augé. For the French ethnologist and anthropologist, places are spaces that people have appropriated and in which relationships have been formed. In contrast, non-places are spaces in which people do not recognize themselves, or do not yet recognize themselves, or no longer recognize themselves."Just as a place is characterized by identity, relation, and history, a space that lacks identity and cannot be described as either relational or historical defines a non-place." (Marc Augé)Through the medium of drawing, I investigate how knowledge about the potential of a place can be generated and how information inscribed in this place can be made visible. By means of my drawing processes I gain new perspectives on spatial structures and surprising insights into their use.By dissolving places out of their original context, reducing their presentation and removing their color, I want to capture the essence of a place and achieve an atmospheric condensation of the experience with it. The drawing process does not only require an analytical understanding of spatial structures and subsequently a reflection on their interrelations, but also a sensual tracing of atmospheric moments. Thus, for me, drawing means feeling and thinking with the pencil in equal measure.Which subjective meanings or collective identities pertain to a place and which memories about provisions inscribed in a place remain? By my individual stroke, like a hand writing, I provide for my observations a subjective frame of interpretation, but at the same time allow the viewer space for reinterpretation.

About ip.forum
The ip.forum is highly regarded as a platform that enables artists to present art in an open and informal way to a culturally minded public. This takes place not only on the premises of the ipcenter company, which is active in the field of education and training, but also on site at the artists’ studios.

In the exhibitions, current or socially relevant topics are artistically illuminated from various perspectives. In doing so, as many aspects as possible should come to light. At exhibition openings or the various ip.forum events, such as discussion rounds and readings, this repeatedly stimulates discourse and joint reflection on the different approaches; as a result, the topics of the events also take on a special significance in the working and seminar environment of the ipcenter.

ipcenter, under the direction of Laszlo Kovacs, has been the leading quality provider of adult education in Austria for more than 20 years. ipcenter is also a place for art and culture in professional and everyday life: With ip.forum, a platform was created together with art historian an curator Gabriele Baumgartner that successfully combines education, career, art and society.
