Talk & workshop: Nature Three Ways: Drawing Architecture
Anna Liu
Part of Guest Series
Eye to Pencil Studio
This talk & workshop, led by architect Anna Liu, will explore different types of architectural drawings, specifically, ones that relate to how architecture embeds nature. In the work of Tonkiu Liu, this emerges in three scales, nature as symbols, as elements, and as design exemplars.
TALK DESCRIPTION
Human beings have always connected to nature through stories, symbols, archetypes. Architecture evokes these through a clarity of leitmotifs. Might the right drawings for these be thumbnail diagrams ? Sunlight, rainfall, wind, are integral part of architecture. Would experiential drawings convey these? Nature abounds with design exemplars that can inform architecture. Perhaps the drawings for exploring these are scientific, analytic, and geometric drawings.
Anna will show three relevant project examples from her studio, and lead a discussion critique, and drawing session with the group, testing ways of drawing. She will then present the work of Le Corbusier and some of the founding principles. The group will then proceed to draw, using these three nature focuses, Le Corbusier’s Chapel at Ronchamp.Anna is an architect and director of Tonkin Liu Architects. Her childhood was in Taiwan, her adolescence in the US, and her professional life, since 1994, has been in Hong Kong and in London.
