Event description

Take a walk in Charles Dickens’ shoes with artist and Big Draw Patron, Gary Andrews (aka @GaryScribbler), as he leads us on a Dickens-themed sketchcrawl through London’s historic streets. Starting at The Monument and ending at the Charles Dickens Museum, you’ll explore hidden alleyways, landmarks, and locations that inspired classics such as Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol. As you sketch, you’ll capture the city as it is today and use your imagination to envision the world that Dickens might have encountered.

This sketchcrawl will be a unique blend of observational drawing and creative interpretation, where Gary will share stories from Dickens' life and works. You’ll be guided to sketch not just what’s in front of you but also the rich narratives and characters that fill his novels. Whether you're capturing the atmospheric streets or reimagining the individuals that populate Dickens’ tales, this tour will take you on both a historical and fictional journey.

We'll wrap up at the Dickens Museum cafe for a hot drink. This tour is ideal for all creatives, history enthusiasts, and anyone who loves to combine sketching with storytelling. The sketchcrawl will last approximately 3 hours, so comfy shoes, warm clothing and an explorer’s spirit are essential! Sketching materials will be provided, so simply bring along a sketchbook and prepare to immerse yourself in the world of Dickens.

This event is designed for adults and young people aged 16+, and open to all skill levels - from beginners to experienced sketchers!

We ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes early in order to sign in and receive your materials. The event is limited to 20 participants, and we will send further details to all our sketchers in the week leading up to the event.
