Drawing together: Bewdley and Tokyo

Part of Ruskin in Wyre Heritage Lottery Project Ruskin Land
Sun 28 Oct 9am - 12.30pm
Through using, understanding and experimenting with traditional British and Japanese drawing methods and materials, everyone will be able to incorporate their own style and knowledge alongside a different cultural practice. There will be a live feed from a forest near Tokyo to create an interaction between the countries early on Sunday morning. A bi-lateral event between the UK and Japan involving two separate but co-ordinated events that will take place at the same time across 9 time zones. Each participating country will transfer and exchange cultural crafts with their associated materials and tools allowing either project to widen their cultural understanding and creative skills. Through the process of using, understanding and experimenting with traditional British and Japanese drawing methods and materials, each participant at The Big Draw will be able to incorporate their own style and knowledge alongside a different cultural practice. To achieve this, The Big Draw will take place simultaneously at Ruskin Land, Bewdley and a forest near to Tokyo.  A live feed will be set up between both locations so that there can be a real time interaction, discussion and display of the activities and works of those involved. Ruskin Land will send charcoal made in the forest together with traditional artists’ paper to the group in Japan, who in turn will exchange Japanese ink, brushes and Washi paper to Ruskin Land. Each group will focus on John Ruskin’s ways of seeing as a starting point using these new materials to draw natural elements in both environments and they will also reference the comic ‘Bloke’s Progress’ which will be translated into Japanese as part of the Ruskin in Japan celebrations.
