We invite you to Sketch Your Surroundings and join in with the Big Draw for York Unlocked.
Our current Creativity from Conflict exhibition showcases the work of
soldier artists. Some of the most interesting objects in the exhibition
are small, pocket sketchbooks carried by soldiers who drew the sights
and surroundings in which they found themselves. Military sketchboards,
which strapped onto the arm so that one could draw whilst on horseback,
were often issued in the 19th century, and recruits were taught to draw
so that they could sketch the surrounding environment and the lie of
the land. Trying to draw the world around you helps you to experience
familiar places through fresh eyes.
The York Unlocked festival curates the opening of over 70 interesting
buildings and open spaces around the City of York over the weekend of 7
& 8 October, giving you the chance to see hidden gems, and we
invite you to pick up a small sketchbook and venture out into the city
and draw things which catch your eye.
As part of this festival you can collect a small sketchbook, pencil and
drawing guide and draw, sketch and doodle the things which capture your
imagination as you explore our amazing places and spaces.

Share your drawings with us if you wish and we will collate them into a Big Draw exhibition.
Our sketchbooks are made from recycled coffeecups, but you are welcome to use your own paper and materials.
