Draw and explore the charming coastal town of Whitstable with artist Liz Atkin!
Join us for a Sketchcrawl by the Sea led by artist, educator, and Big Draw Ambassador Liz Atkin, in collaboration with the Horsebridge Arts Centre. We’ll explore the unique charm of Whitstable, starting our walk at the Horsebridge and heading along the waterfront towards the harbour. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to capture the character of the town’s iconic fisherman huts and wooden buildings - with any luck, you might even spot Greta, a beautiful Thames Barge often anchored in the harbour!
Whitstable, once known as Whitstable-on-Sea, has a rich history dating back to Roman times, famous for its Native Oysters and coastal trade. As we walk, Liz will guide you in capturing the essence of this picturesque slice of the Kent Coast. You’ll witness first-hand how Whitstable’s history and relationship with the sea have shaped its architecture and atmosphere; from the narrow alleys lined with weathered wooden structures to the open expanse of the harbour, there will be plenty to inspire your sketches.
Whether bathed in autumn sunshine or showered with gentle rain, Whitstable offers endless inspiration. That said, it’s always sensible to have a Plan B. Should the great British weather really take a turn for the worst, we will retreat back to the Horsebridge Centre, where you can continue drawing in the warmth of the studio.
The sketchcrawl will last 1.5 hours, so comfy shoes, warm clothing and an explorer’s spirit are essential! Charcoal and sketching materials will be provided, so simply bring along a sketchbook and prepare to immerse yourself in the vibrant history and stunning sights of this lively seaside town.
We ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes early in order to sign in and receive your materials. The event is limited to 20 participants, and we will send further details to all our sketchers a week prior to the event.
