Adult drawing classes throughout October at Glastonbury Abbey. All levels are welcome.
Throughout the night time drawing sessions, we will light up parts of the abbey in colour for you to enjoy and draw in a variety of medium such as pastel, charcoal, conte, or mixed media if preferred. The day time drawing workshop will focus on exploring the abbey grounds and creating individual compositions. We will look at the importance of thumbnails and how photographs can be useful when constructing a drawing.
Through drawing what you see and engaging the senses you will learn to draw the abbey and its surroundings with an emphasis on finding your own voice.

The day time drawing workshop will focus on exploring the abbey grounds and creating individual compositions. We will look at the importance of thumbnails and how photographs can be useful when constructing a drawing. Through drawing what you see and engaging the senses you will learn to draw the abbey and its surroundings with an emphasis on finding your own voice. You will experience a variety of compositions: the Abbots Kitchen, Lady Chapel, the elegant gothic arches and not forgetting the beautiful trees. What is the Big Draw?
This year's topic for The Big Draw is “drawing with the senses”. Participants are asked to immerse themselves in the experience of Glastonbury Abbey and its grounds as a way of drawing expressively. You will experience different compositions in a variety of media and will receive helpful, practical advice on how to tackle foliage, trees and architectural elements. Although skills and techniques will be taught, there is also a focus on finding your own voice and how drawing can support our well being.
We are offering both a daytime workshop and a series of night-time drawing classes, as a way of immersing our senses in two very different perceptions of the same space. During the evening session parts of the abbey will be lit up in colour. Each week we will tackle one of the four compositions. The day time drawing workshop will focus on exploring the abbey grounds and creating individual compositions. We will look at the importance of thumbnails and how photographs can be useful when constructing a drawing. What to bring:- A portfolio or folder to carry work home
- Any medium you like to use. All though some will be provided, a materials list will be sent to you if you like to have your own or simply just want to start practising.
- If you use a portable easel or drawing board you prefer you are welcome to bring it.
- Warm clothes, sensible footwear, raincoat or umbrella as we will be drawing outside.
- A camp chair
- A snack or packed lunch
Tea and coffee facilities will be available and some biscuits. An honesty pot system will be used so some change will be handy.Along with a materials list you will be sent some handy worksheets for you to use ahead of the activity. These are offered to you if you are a beginner or returning to drawing and are feeling nervous or would just like to practise. Making use of the worksheets is up to you and not compulsory or essential to your taking part.The sessions will start at Abbey House and then move into the abbey grounds.#DrawingwithSenses #TheBigDraw
