THANK YOU TO EVERY WHO TOOK PART IN THE STEAM POWERED BIG DRAW FESTIVAL 2016!

Students from Stanley Grove Primary Academy are presented with their Award by Big Draw Patron Bob & Roberta Smith for their events around 'The Story of The Peppered Moth' exploring evolution and adaptation.

The Big Draw is thrilled to reveal the 9 Winners of The Big Draw Awards 2017, announced at a ceremony, held for the first time, at Carpenters' Hall, London in July 2017.

The Big Draw Awards celebrate the organisers of outstanding events that take place as part of the international Big Draw Festival each October. All registered Big Draw event organisers who took part in the STEAM Powered Big Draw Festival 2016 were invited to enter the awards. Entries were received from all over the world.

As well as a cash prize, each winner received a certificate illustrated by patron of The Big Draw, Chris Riddell, and a newly designed crest to promote their award across multiple platforms.

Primary School Award 1/2   Stanley Grove Primary Academy, Manchester   The Story of The Peppered Moth: An exploration of science, industry and pollution through populating Greater Manchester with thousands of  Peppered Moths hand-made and hand-drawn by Stanley Grove students.
         
Primary School Award 2/2   Ysgol Glannau Gwaun – Primary School, Wales   Maths in Motion: Maths problems on timetables and sequencing lead to a fully animated film narrated by and created from drawings by Ysgol Glannau Gwaun students. See the event video here.
         
Secondary School Award   Kingsdale Foundation, London   Installation of inventions: Kingsdale Foundation students pitched ideas for their own inventions before researching, investigating and modifiying existing objects, with the resulting re-decorated inventions forming a 700 piece installation in the school’s atrium. 
         
Art Clubs and Societies Award   Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community/Society, Wales   This is Me! Volunteers, carers, support workers and users of the Tea & Chat dementia drop-in and Mountains Care Home collaborated with visitors to the Brecon Guildhall in producing an exhibition based on their response to the exclamation ‘This is Me!’.
 
         
Community, Participatory and Libraries Award   Wyre Community Land Trust, Worcestershire   The Big Draw & Apple Day: Traditional methods were used to make charcoal that was used in a series of drawing activities in the wood pastures and fields around Worcestershire’s idyllic Ruskin Land, producing work for an exhibition in the local Bewdley Museum. ‘Big Draw and Apple Day’ Watch event video here
         
Museums and Galleries Award   National Mining Museum Scotland, Scotland   Crafting the Mine: Visitors to the mining museum and local primary schools collaborated on a crowd-sourced image of buildings inspired by the Lady Victoria Colliery, with schools workshops exploring a virtual reconstruction of the site using Minecraft, and investigating the history and dangers of the mining industry. 
         
Founder’s Award   St Edmunds Nursery School and Children’s Centre   Conkers & Spiders: Children between the ages of 2-4 used conkers and spiders as visual stimuli to investigate drawing in a wide range of settings around the centre, from indoor play areas to the open air. Guest Panellist’s Choice Award   United World College Maastricht   30 different drawing workshops made up UWCM’s Big Draw Day, extending to participants from local organisations as diverse as a local elderly home, childcare centre, and refugee centre.
         
NEW AWARD: 'The Art of Business’ Award   Drax Power Ltd -  Animation Workshops, Selby   An intricately collaborative animation workshop, with groups working to draw elements of each scene separately, then bringing them together in an animated film exploring Drax Power Station’s internal workings, surrounding environment, and imaginary steam machines.
         

Special commendations went to:

  • Kenton Secondary School  - ‘Kenton’s STEAM Petri dish Big Draw’

  • North Yorkshire County Record Office - ‘Invented in Yorkshire’

  • Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery - ‘The ADA Installation’
